"WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Energy joined the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) to form a new partnership to increase the science and mathematics skills of the nation’s youngest, fastest-growing minority population.

A formal Memorandum of Understanding outlining proposals to enhance the science and mathematics skills of Hispanic higher education students was signed last week in Washington, D.C. The agreement also calls for promoting Department of Energy career and grant opportunities to HACU member campuses serving the largest concentrations of Hispanic higher education students.

“This strategically important document will empower the Hispanic American community with new tools to improve the science and mathematics skills of our Hispanic higher education students, while also providing new resources for those campuses that serve our students,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores.

“Hispanics within five years are expected to become the nation’s largest minority population. This new commitment from the Department of Energy will produce long-term benefits to enhance their success in these critical fields of study for a population that will play a vital role in advancing our country’s economy and technology base,” Flores said.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) supports efforts to increase student internships, improve on-campus math and science programs and provide information about Department of Energy career and grant opportunities to HACU member campuses. HACU represents more than 270 colleges and universities that collectively educate more than two-thirds of all Hispanic higher education students.
