HACU applauds award of 15 Defense grants
To 11 member Hispanic-Serving Institutions

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) applauds the award of more than $3.9 million in new U.S. Department of Defense grants to 11 HACU-member Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) in California, Florida, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Puerto Rico and Texas.

“These important new grants will not only enhance programs and capabilities in disciplines critical to national security and the Department of Defense; they will also contribute to efforts to increase the numbers of Hispanics in science, engineering, technology and mathematics critical to our economy,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores.

“HACU applauds the leadership of this year’s grant recipients, who are at the forefront of efforts to equip our country’s youngest and largest ethnic population with the advanced skills and degrees they will need to excel as our future scientists, teachers and leaders,” Flores said.

The new research and infrastructure grants were awarded under the FY 2004 U.S. Department of Defense Historically Black Colleges and Universities/Minority Institutions (HBCU/MI) Infrastructure Support Program. HSIs have a student enrollment that is at least 25 percent Hispanic.

The new grant recipients, all HACU member HSIs, are:

Texas A&M International University
University of Miami
University of New Mexico 
University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras (3 grants)
University of Texas at El Paso
University of Texas-Pan American
