The deadline for freshman to apply for the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, an initiative begun by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife, Melissa Gates, is February 1, 2001. The program was established to increase the number of Hispanic and other minority students enrolled in and completing college degree programs-particularly in education, science, mathematics, engineering or library science fields. Eligible students must show academic promise, financial need and be entering a college or university as full-time, degree-seeking freshmen in the fall of 2001.
