HACU’s Annual Conference Youth Leadership Fair offers local high school students the opportunity to experience a college campus up close

Phoenix, AZ – As part of its 19th Annual Conference, “Championing Hispanic Higher Education Success: Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders,” in Phoenix, Arizona, The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) along with Phoenix College will host its Annual Youth Leadership Fair on Friday, October 14, 2005, from 8:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m., at the Phoenix College campus.  This extraordinary event offers local Phoenix high school juniors and seniors the chance to learn about educational opportunities; financial aid options at community college and university levels for academic and occupational programs; and to meet with directors of different degree and certification programs that Phoenix College has to offer.

Phoenix College will provide transportation for local high school students to and from the college, and will also supply lunch, entertainment and all conference materials.

The keynote speaker for the event is the Honorable Mary H. Murguia, U.S. District Court, who will offer her motivational remarks at the welcoming assembly at 9:30 a.m. in the Bulpitt Auditorium.  In 1999, Attorney General Janet Reno named Mary H. Murguia as Director of the Executive Office for United States Attorneys (EOUSA) of the Department of Justice.  In that capacity Judge Murguia provided oversight of and support to the 94 Offices of the United States Attorneys, approximately 5,000 Assistant United States Attorneys, and approximately 5,000 support staff employees and served as the primary liaison between the United States Attorneys and the Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, the Department's legal divisions, and other Department components.

Welcome remarks will be given by Dr. Anna Solley, acting President of Phoenix College, and Dr. Antonio Flores, President and CEO of HACU.

In addition to attending several informational sessions on financial aid, career planning, advisement and college entrance requirements, students will see the play, The Vine, by Teatro Bravo performed at the Bulpitt Auditorium beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Lunch will feature a local DJ and the closing of the fair will be highlighted by several exciting drawings.  There will be an individual laptop drawing and additional laptops will be given away to the high school with the highest attendance and a school chaperone.  Then there will be a PC scholarship drawing to be awarded to a lucky participant.  You must be present to win for each drawing.
