"San Antonio, Texas — Hispanic Business magazine twice this year recognized the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) and HACU President Antonio R. Flores for the organization's national leadership role and for its major investments in the Hispanic community.

The magazine chose Flores as among ""The 100 Most Influential Hispanics"" in one issue. In another issue, HACU was named one of the nation's top 25 nonprofit organizations and ""pillars of the community"" in the magazine's first Hispanic Business Nonprofit 25 Directory.

""Together, the top 25 Hispanic nonprofits report expenditures of $178 million,"" the magazine reported. ""That figure represents a major social investment in the Hispanic community-and an ongoing work that deserves to grab headlines.""

HACU represents more than 270 colleges and universities that collectively educate more than two-thirds of all Hispanic higher education students. HACU has won record private and public sector funding and other support for these campuses in recent years.

The association, with headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, and legislative affairs offices in Washington, D.C., is the nation's leading advocate for increasing education resources for all members of the nation's youngest and fastest-growing minority population.

""We are delighted to receive this national recognition, which we share with all of our member campuses and our government, corporate and nonprofit allies throughout the country. All share a dedication to our mission to champion the college and career success of what soon will become the nation's largest minority population,"" Flores said.

California Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante recently awarded a Certificate of Commendation to HACU and to Flores for being named a top nonprofit organization. Bustamante also set aside November 16, 2000, as a day to ""encourage all Californians to join me in honoring (HACU's) accomplishments."" HACU's membership includes 60 colleges and universities in California. "
