First Recipient of a HACU-Laureate International Program Scholarship Studies in Peru

San Antonio, TX – Lorena Cardenas was born in Peru but left when she was only 10 years old.  Now, at 21, she has returned to continue her higher education and reconnect with her homeland thanks to a scholarship Cardenas received from the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU)-Laureate International Program.

Laureate International Universities, a group of accredited institutions owned by Laureate Education, Inc. (NASDAQ:LAUR), the world’s leading international provider of higher education, partnered with the HACU last year to award more than $8 million in tuition scholarships for Latinos and other students to study abroad throughout Europe and Latin America.

Created to address some of the most significant barriers preventing students, particularly Latinos, from studying abroad - lack of financial resources and access to information on program options, this unparalleled program provides students from HACU’s more than 450 U.S. and Puerto Rico member schools the opportunity to study abroad at one of Laureate’s 15 universities in various countries.

“I am very thankful to the HACU-Laureate International Program and would recommend it to everyone because it gave me the opportunity to visit my country of origin when my college did not have any direct affiliations with universities in Peru.  As a student enrolled in a HACU member institution, I was able to qualify for this scholarship, apply my financial aid to cover other program fee expenses and receive academic credit for the courses I am taking abroad from my home institution,” Cardenas said.

Lorena Cardenas is taking seven classes ranging from business, finance, and Peruvian culture at the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas.  She is eligible to receive academic credit for all of these at Long Island University, where she is currently a junior.

“My academic experience at the Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas is the greatest challenge of my college career because of the demanding nature of college life in Peru, but I am also very excited to have an opportunity to challenge myself in a way I never had a chance to do in the U.S.,” stated Cardenas.

To apply to the HACU-Laureate International Scholarship Program, students from HACU member schools can go online (http://www.internationalscholarships.net/ or http://www.becasinternacioanles.net/ in Spanish), call the special information number (866) 219-3658 or speak with a financial aid or study abroad coordinator at their school.  Scholarship awards will be made exclusively based on the policies established by HACU and Laureate International Universities.  The next application deadline is May 15, 2006.
