HACU executive director of legislative affairs serves on panel on Teacher Diversity

Alicia Diaz, executive director of legislative affairs for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), served on a panel, "Creating and Organizing Teacher Diversity Initiatives," at the AACTE Diversified Teaching Workforce (DTW) Institute preconference event on February 28, 2018, in Baltimore, Md. Other panelists included Delisa Saunders, American Federation of Teachers; and Eric Duncan, National Council on Teacher Quality.

According to Diaz teacher diversity initiatives are needed, when we consider the following:
  • At a time when the Hispanic student enrollment in the nation’s public school system is 27% and growing, the percentage of Hispanic teachers remains stagnant at 7.8%.
  • America’s children of color will, for the majority of their school years, not have any teacher who is a reflection of their own image.
  • Hispanic-Serving Institutions produce the majority of Hispanic teachers in this country – closing the Hispanic teacher/Hispanic student disparity will require investing in and supporting the teacher preparation work of Hispanic-serving schools of education.

DTW Topical Action Group convened national leaders from nationwide colleges and universities to discuss innovative efforts for addressing racial/ethnic teacher diversity.
