Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), executive director of legislative affairs John Aguilar, served on the panel, discussing "Diversity and Inclusion Issues/Climate on University Campuses," at the Admissions Professionals meeting for the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA) on July 19, 2018, in Washington, D.C.
Other panelists included Frederick V. Engram Jr., manager, graduate recruitment communications, Office of Graduate Studies and Research, American University; and Sharmeen Ahsan-Bracciale, managing director, Shorelight Education.
Aguilar’s remarks focused on Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and highlighted the specific efforts of HSIs to create more
inclusive environments on their campuses. The number of HSIs continues to grow rapidly, from 189 in 1994, to 229 in 2000, to 245 in 2005, to 311 in 2010, and 492 in 2016. Of these, 215 (46%) were public two-year institutions, 120 public four-year institutions, 135 private four-year institutions, and 22 private two year institution.
