The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities is providing the following information from the Office of High Energy Physics (HEP).

The Office of High Energy Physics at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is in the process of preparing for the FY 2022 Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the annual comparative review of research proposals submitted by U.S. academic institutions. The FOA will be issued later this summer. The exact deadlines will be provided as soon as they become available.

In order to brief the HEP community on this and other FOAs, including new initiatives supporting science research in the FY 2022 President’s Budget Request, and to provide a status and overview of the DOE-supported HEP program, a Virtual HEP Principal Investigator (PI) Meeting will be held on August 9-12, 2021.  The meeting is modeled as previously held DOE-HEP PI meetings but will be conducted fully online through the use of Zoom teleconferencing. 

This invitation is also extended to co-PIs on an existing DOE grant, those PIs interested in applying to future DOE FOAs, interested national laboratory staff, and interested postdoctoral researchers that are considering new faculty or staff positions at U.S. universities or DOE laboratories. 

The format for the meeting includes the following:

• General presentations during a plenary Zoom session covering the overall DOE-HEP program, budgetary issues, and different HEP FOAs at DOE which PIs may apply to.
• Parallel Zoom sessions led by individual DOE-HEP Program Managers (PMs). These sessions will provide an opportunity for PMs to present PIs with detailed guidance on preparing applications for the DOE-HEP merit review process and discussing programmatic priorities and budgetary factors for the respective subprogram.
• Additional sessions targeted at special topics: Early Career research and related concerns; diversity, equity, and inclusion in DOE Office of Science and HEP; continuing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on university and laboratory research; HEP computing; and a roundtable discussion on challenges for underrepresented groups and minority-serving institutions.
• Opportunities for separate 1-on-1 or small group remote sessions between PMs and PIs across the different HEP program areas during the course of the 3.5 days.
