HACU Town Hall on Immigration Reform held on Oct. 27 during 35^th Annual Conference

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities held its Town Hall, “The Time for Immigration Reform is Now: The Key Role Colleges & Universities Can Play in Shaping Policy,” on Oct. 27, 2021. The event was part of HACU’s 35^th Annual Conference, “35 Years of Championing Hispanic Higher Education,” held virtually Oct. 25-27, 2021.

The Town Hall, moderated by Devorah Lieberman, Ph.D., president of the University of La Verne, opened with welcome remarks from HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores, followed by a video message from U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and remarks from Rep. Linda T. Sánchez, Calif. 38^th Congressional District, and U.S. Senator John Cornyn, Texas.

Panelists of the Town Hall included Mark Hugo Lopez, Ph.D., director of race and ethnicity research at the Pew Research Center and Michael Drake, M.D., president of the University of California. A Q&A session followed the panel discussion.

HACU presented the Exemplary Policy/Advocacy Leadership Award to Rep. Joaquin Castro, Texas 20^th Congressional District; the Outstanding HACU Public Sector Partner to the U.S. Census Bureau; and Outstanding HACU Private Sector Partner to Google.
