"San Antonio, Texas - Seventy-six Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) from 11 states, including Puerto Rico, were selected to receive a total $25,770,568 from the 1999 Title V of the Higher Education Act.

These grants are a result of the work the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) and its supporters have done to promote more funding for HSIs, whose enrollment is at least 25 percent Hispanic.

“This money is proof that HACU’s message is being heard. With it, our HSIs can continue to provide Hispanic students with the quality education they need to succeed in the work force,” said Antonio Flores, HACU president and CEO.

On HACU’s side is the Senate Hispanic-Serving Institutions Coalition, led by Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) and Jeff Bingaman (D-New Mexico), which has been a critical supporter for Hispanic education.

Twelve Texas HSIs benefiting from Title V money are University of Texas at El Paso, El Paso Community College, Palo Alto College in San Antonio, Our Lady of The Lake University in San Antonio, Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi, University Of Houston, Texas State Technical College in Harlingen, South Texas Community College in McAllen, Sul Ross State University in Alpine, Costal Bend College in Beeville and Midland College in Midland.
