More than 400 college students head out to nationwide locations
as part of HACU National Internship Program

San Antonio, TX - The HACU National Internship Program (HNIP), the nation’s largest Hispanic internship program, continues to “open the doors of opportunity” for the next generation of Hispanic leaders as it welcomed 400 students from colleges and universities for the summer (See list below). The majority of the students are participating in internships at federal agencies in Washington, D.C.; 21 students will intern at corporations throughout the United States.

Since its inception in 1992, the HACU National Internship Program has provided paid internships to more than 7,000 college students during spring, summer and fall sessions at federal agencies and corporations. These 10- and 15-week internships allow college students to experience the diversity of careers that exist in the federal and corporate sectors. The internships have led to permanent employment opportunities for many students.

An independent survey of past program participants was completed during HNIP’s 15th anniversary in 2007. The findings indicated that the program clearly increases professional career opportunities for participants and is truly a “best practice” in the recruitment of Hispanics into the federal government.

SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS:

• As a result of their internship experience, over 90 percent of the participants considered a career with the federal government, showing a 44-percentage-point increase compared to their intentions prior to completing their internship assignment.

• Nearly 38 percent of survey respondents now work in the federal government.

• 59 percent of students returning to school after the completion of their internship assignment were made offers to return in the future, either as a permanent employee or as an intern.

• 80 percent of students that graduated with their degree were offered permanent positions or internships with the federal government.

• 60 percent of the participants reported that their HNIP experience assisted them in finding their current jobs.

• Over 99 percent of the participants would recommend the program to students enrolled in college today.

As of 6/13/08, the following colleges and universities have students participating this summer in HNIP 2008. Download a Microsoft Word file of list of names here.
