HACU signs up to make an Academic Impact

HACU recently announced a new collaboration with the United Nations (UN) and is encouraging presidents and chief executive officers of HACU-member institutions to subscribe to a new global initiative: Academic Impact.

Academic Impact is a global initiative that aligns institutions of higher education with the United Nations in actively supporting ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, literacy, sustainability and conflict resolution. Participating colleges or universities are asked to actively demonstrate support of at least one of those principles each year.

“HACU applauds this initiative that directly focuses on worldwide collaboration of higher education to meet the Millennium Development Goals,” said Alvaro Romo, Ph.D., HACU Associate Vice President for Programs, Services and International Affairs. “HACU is requesting that higher education institutions answer this call to action.”

Institutions can sign up online at http://www.academicimpact.org/. Institutions that sign up soon will be invited to the formal launch event by the Secretary-General of the United Nations. HACU is also encouraging its member institutions to send an e-mail to notify HACU of  their participation.  HACU-member institutions will be listed in a future magazine edition of The Voice of Hispanic Higher Education.

The HACU contact for the initiative is Alvaro Romo, Ph.D. Phone (210) 576-3244, e-mail aromo@hacu.net.
