EPI Acknowledges HACU's Flores for Leadership

The President of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities Honored with Special Lifetime Achievement Award

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, June 4, 2009 — The Educational Policy Institute (EPI) honored Dr. Antonio Flores, President of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, with the EPI Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's International Conference on Student Retention, Retention 2009, on May 28 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

During his keynote address at Retention 2009 on May 28th, Flores highlighted the growing size of the Hispanic population in the US, reporting that, 2050, more than one-in-four of the US population will be Hispanic. Despite this growing population, he added, few teachers in K-12 schools are Hispanic. Through his speech, he described HACU’s current legislative agenda, which includes support for the enactment of the DREAM Act, which would permit states to determine state residency for higher education purposes and to authorize the cancellation of removal and adjustment of status of certain alien students who are long-term United States residents. Other issues raised by Dr. Flores included Title V appropriations for Hispanic-serving institutions, including a first-time $100 million appropriation for graduate education support.

"Dr. Flores stands as an example of putting thoughts into action," said EPI President & CEO Dr. Watson Scott Swail. "He continues to stand tall not only for Hispanic students and institutions, but for all students, especially those who are historically underrepresented in higher education. He is a most deserved recipient of the EPI 2009 Achievement Award."

Past awardees include Reg Weaver, former President of the National Education Association, and Clifford Adelman of the Institute for Higher Education Policy.
