Five fashion design students awarded scholarships

The scholarship recipients of the Design Your Future/Diseña Tu Futuro competition were announced during a student track event on Nov. 1, 2009, which was held as part of HACU’s 23rd Annual Conference.

The five finalists of the Design Your Future/Diseña Tu Futuro competition, presented by HACU and Gap Inc. and LATINA Style magazine, were selected when students majoring in a fashion apparel design program at HACU-member institutions were given a chance to submit their essay and original design entry.

In the final judging, students modeled their own designs on a fashion runway as they competed for scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

The scholarship awards were announced as follows:

  • Neil Marek, a fashion design major with a minor in fashion merchandising at the University of North Texas, Denton, Texas, will receive a $5,000 scholarship.
  • Ani Abramian, a fashion design major at Woodbury University, Burbank, California, will receive a $4000 scholarship.
  • Griselda Aguirre, a fashion design major with a minor in marketing at the University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas, will receive a $3,000 scholarship.
  • Miquette Elliott, a design major with emphasis in fashion and a minor in textiles at the University of California-Davis, Davis, California will receive a $2,000 scholarship.
  • Socorro Franco, an apparel design and pattern design major at El Centro College, Dallas, Texas, will receive a $1000 scholarship.

This year marks the second year the Design Your Future/Diseña Tu Futuro competition is offered to fashion design majors at HACU-member institutions.
