"SAN ANTONIO, TX—The nation’s top-hiring authority has pledged unprecedented support to a student internship program that is directly addressing the lack of Hispanic representation in the federal work force.

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management has signed a five-year, exclusive contract with the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) National Internship Program in support of the program’s role as the leading source for providing Hispanic student internship opportunities in the nation’s capital.

“This unprecedented level of support demonstrates the long-term commitment of the Office of Personnel Management’s efforts in support of a future federal work force that better reflects the nation’s citizens in an era of rapidly changing demographics,” said HACU President Antonio Flores.

The $1.7 million-plus contract represents important recognition from an agency that sets the tone for hiring practices and policies government-wide, and will expand efforts to introduce more young Hispanics to promising federal career opportunities, said HACU National Internship Program Executive Director William Rafael Gil.

Hispanics remain the only under-represented minority population in the federal work force at a time when Hispanics now constitute 40 percent of all new labor force entrants, Gil said.

“We appreciate this investment in our program and in the future of the Hispanic community from a federal agency that has proven a model in efforts to promote diversity, especially when it comes to the nation’s fastest-growing minority population,” Gil said.

HACU represents more than 230 colleges and universities with high Hispanic student enrollment rates in the United States, Puerto Rico and abroad.

The HACU National Internship Program since 1992 has provided more than 2,100 paid internships at agencies in Washington, D.C., and around the country to top students from HACU member campuses.
