“The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is a longstanding partner of HACU in introducing Hispanic higher education students to rewarding public health care careers and in its dedication to serving our nation’s diverse communities,” HACU President and CEO Antonio Flores said.
“This is a federal agency that truly embraces diversity in its mission and in its outreach. We applaud the extraordinary leadership and dedication of the people of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in promoting a healthier, safer future for Hispanic Americans and for all Americans,” Flores said in presenting the award at HACU’s 16th Annual Conference under way in Denver, Colorado.
HACU represents more than 335 member and partner colleges and universities collectively serving more than two-thirds of all Hispanic higher education students.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is a leading partner in the HACU National Internship Program -- the nation’s largest Hispanic college internship program.
DHHS has provided hundreds of students paid internships at the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Food and Drug Administration, Office of Civil Rights, DHHS program support centers and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration. Forty-four students from HACU member colleges and universities are on the job at DHHS agency offices this fall.
The agency is also a partner in the DHHS/HACU Professions Capacity Building Project, which is providing new health-related research opportunities to faculty at those colleges and universities serving the largest concentrations of Hispanic higher education students.
