Pre-conference Student Track Session 1:
Tips for Successfully Advocating for HSIs
Tips for Successfully Advocating for HSIs is designed to introduce students to HACU and its crucial role in advocating for the five million students served and educated by the 572 Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) nationwide. Participants will gain insights into the vibrant and diverse demographics at HSIs and delve into the behind-the-scenes efforts of HACU's core advocacy initiatives aimed at making a meaningful impact in Congress. By the end of the session, students will leave with a solid understanding of HSIs, HACU’s advocacy efforts, and resources to create a personalized “briefing sheet” on their respective Members of Congress.

The "Fireside Chat with Amanda Miller, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Higher Education," will highlight the latest support and opportunities available at the Department of Education for Hispanic-Serving Institutions. This session is designed to facilitate an in-depth understanding of the Department’s initiatives aimed at enhancing the educational landscape for Hispanic students and Hispanic-Serving Institutions.

Crafting and Delivering your HSI Advocacy Pitch
Students will dive into the essential elements of creating a compelling pitch. Following an informative session, participants will break into small groups to apply what they've learned. Utilizing the provided member briefing sheets and their advocacy knowledge, each group will craft a unique pitch. The session will conclude with a pitch competition, where self-selected students will deliver their best pitches for the chance to win Southwest Vouchers, an iPad, and cash rewards. Judging criteria will focus on clarity, persuasiveness, and relevance to HSI advocacy.

Federal Funding Opportunities for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs)
This federal HSI funding session is moderated by Dr. Donna Carroll, Executive Director of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities. This session convenes experts from leading federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation, National Telecommunications and Information Administration, and U.S. Department of Agriculture, to explore funding avenues and support programs tailored for HSI.
