Computing Alliance of HSIs: A Resource for Hispanics in Computing

The Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI) was formed as part of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) program in 2006 to increase the number of Hispanics entering, persisting and advancing in computing as students, faculty and computing professionals.  Computing is an exciting field, rapidly enabling innovation in science, industry and society in general, and is the cornerstone of the future economy.  There is currently a shortage in the national computing workforce, and the field is expected to “grow much faster than [the] average” occupation, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  Hispanics are extremely underrepresented not only in the workforce, but also in the “pipeline” among the nation’s computer science baccalaureate and advanced degree graduates.  CAHSI is developing to become a resource for Hispanics in computing.

CAHSI is working to help Hispanics to participate in, contribute to and become leaders in computing and its advancements for society, and thus to enable the Hispanic community to better reap the economic and intellectual benefits.  CAHSI is a “grass roots” consortium of: 

  • California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH),
  • Florida International University (FIU),
  • New Mexico State University (NMSU),
  • Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC),
  • University of Houston-Downtown (UHD),
  • University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez (UPRM), and 
  • University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), the lead institution. 

The Consortium also includes industry and non-profit organization partners, like HACU, who share their goals.  It involves a network of social scientists interested in the issues surrounding recruitment, retention and advancement of Hispanics in computing and higher education and science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in general.  CAHSI is sharing and developing interventions that directly impact students.
