Title V Application Announcement Continues to Be Delayed

On Monday, June 4, HACU’s President and CEO Antonio Flores again wrote U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings asking her personally to expedite the still-delayed application announcement for the FY 2007 Title V - "Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program."  To see the letter, click on the link: /images/hacu/govrel/spellings-june4.final.pdf.

HACU had earlier learned that this year’s process has been delayed due to legislative changes last fall which necessitated a legal review of the Title V program application, a review which is still underway. An April 26 letter to the Secretary has received no response.

In this week’s letter to Secretary Spellings, Dr. Flores reasserted the need for this review to be completed and the announcement to be made as expeditiously as possible. He noted the short timeframe HSIs will have to submit their applications once the announcement is made and the short time the Department will have to complete the application review and selection process by the federally mandated date of September 30, 2007.

HACU has also been in communication with key Members of Congress about this situation to request their assistance.

HACU will keep everyone informed of any new developments about the FY 2007 Title V - Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions Program application announcement.
