The Honorable George W. Bush

President of the United States

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Ave., NW

Washington, DC  20500

Dear President Bush:

On behalf of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) and its more than 400 member institutions across the nation, I respectfully urge you to take the historic and long-overdue step of nominating a distinguished Hispanic jurist for confirmation by the U.S. Senate to the U.S. Supreme Court.

HACU-member colleges and universities are home to three of every four of the nearly two million Hispanic college students in the United States and Puerto Rico.   These young leaders and their millions of family members and neighbors fully expect you to make history and do justice to the largest racial/ethnic community in the country.  Your nomination of a Hispanic to the Supreme Court would become a major milestone in our nation’s goal of ensuring that its institutions reflect the diverse face of America.  HACU’s extended family of nearly 45 million Hispanic Americans would forever remember such a historic and just national milestone.

We would be pleased to work with your lead team in the Senate confirmation process of a distinguished Hispanic that has demonstrated judicial prudence and fairness.  The nation, as a whole, would support such a nominee.

Mr. President, you have a unique opportunity to advance the cause of inclusion in the one branch of government that often redefines the course of public life in our society.  We urge you to include a judicious Hispanic voice in our highest court of law.

Thank you for your consideration of this recommendation.

Respectfully,

Antonio R. Flores
President and CEO
