Ninety-four college students participating in HACU’s National Internship Program are among those affected by the government shutdown. Most of the students recently began their federal internships this past week and are among those who will be unable to work on Monday.
According to Luis Maldonado, chief advocacy officer from HACU’s Washington, DC office, students were provided advanced information on what to expect in the event of a government shutdown.
“HACU program staff is in contact with the student interns affected to provide support and any updates,” said Maldonado. “We will continue to monitor all agency updates to keep our interns informed.”
The 2018 spring internship assignments include various offices at five federal agencies: Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency; Library of Congress; National Credit Union Administration; National Institutes of Health; United States Department of Health and Human Services; and United States Department of Agriculture.
Maldonado indicates the students have been instructed to follow these guidelines:
- DC interns (including Beltsville and Rockville/surround areas): Do not report to work on Monday. An e-mail with information with an alternate schedule will be sent by Franchesca Rybar on Monday, Jan. 22.
- Field interns: most agencies outside of DC will continue to operate and you will be permitted to continue work as a contractor. Be sure to confirm this with your supervisor beforehand. If unsure, please wait for an e-mail from Arely Navarrete on Monday, Jan. 22.
