"WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Education during Hispanic Heritage Month joined the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities in a new partnership on behalf of the nation’s youngest, fastest growing minority population.

A formal Memorandum of Understanding outlining a wide-reaching action plan to increase the ranks of Hispanic college graduates was signed at a special ceremony at 2:30 p.m. September 25 in the Department of Education Barnard Auditorium at 400 Maryland Ave. SW in Washington, D.C.

“This event signals a formal commitment from the Department of Education to empower the Hispanic American community with vital support for the academic and career success of what soon will become the nation’s largest Hispanic population,” said Antonio R. Flores, President and CEO of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU).

“Increasing the higher education success, skills and earning power of Hispanic Americans will translate into success for all of us in an economy in which one of every three new workers is Hispanic,” Flores said. “This new partnership also empowers our member colleges and universities at the forefront of this effort.”

The Memorandum of Understanding outlines plans to provide enhanced student internship, faculty research support and campus technology assistance to HACU member institutions. The agency also pledges to increase Department of Education employment opportunities for students attending these campuses, as well as development support for HACU. A Department of Education/HACU Leadership Group will serve as an advisory body for partnership initiatives.

HACU represents more than 260 colleges and universities with high Hispanic enrollment. In the United States, these institutions are home to more than two-thirds of all Hispanic higher education students. HACU also is a national leader in pre-collegiate programs and legislative initiatives designed to open more doors to a college education for Hispanic Americans at every age level. "
