"SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- More than 2,000 national and international academic, community, corporate, government and student leaders are expected to meet in Denver, Colorado, in October 2002 for the 16th Annual Conference of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU).

HACU has issued a “Call for Papers” to attract proposals for presentations at more than 35 workshops and panel sessions scheduled for HACU’s 16th Annual Conference, “Hispanic Empowerment: America’s Key to Prosperity,” October 26-29, 2002, at The Adams Mark Hotel in downtown Denver, Colorado. The deadline for submitting proposals is May 17, 2002.

“This annual conference is a powerful national platform to focus attention on the college and career needs of the country’s youngest and largest ethnic population. The stakes are dramatic in a country where Hispanics continue to suffer low high school and college graduation rates. Today, one of every three new workers in the U.S. labor force is Hispanic. By 2050, the U.S. Labor Department projects that one of every two new workers will be Hispanic,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio Flores.

“This conference also is a forum for presenting the latest demographic trends that will impact our future education and economic policies, as well as a showcase for model programs and initiatives that are building a better future for residents of our diverse communities,” Flores said.

HACU represents more than 318 colleges and universities serving the largest concentrations of Hispanic higher education states in every major state and Puerto Rico. HACU’s membership also includes higher education institutions throughout Latin America and in Spain.
