HACU and the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda Call for Immigration Reform in Light of Alabama Court Decision

HACU and 30 other leading Hispanic organizations that make up the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) last week wrote to leading Democrats on the House and Senate Judiciary Committee and to President Obama calling for Comprehensive Immigration Reform. The letter urges action in response to the recent Alabama court ruling which allows a new Alabama state law to limit immigrants’ rights. Among other requirements, the new law requires public schools to demand citizenship documentation from parents of school children, voids contracts signed by undocumented persons, and allows police to demand “papers” of anyone they suspect is undocumented.

Other states, including Indiana and Arizona, have passed similar anti-immigrant legislation. The letter warns that more states may follow the path of limiting immigrant rights if nothing is done at the federal level. NHLA asks Congress and the President to act on Comprehensive Immigration Reform to avoid future imitations of the Alabama law.
