HACU to host the Fifth PreK-12/Higher Education Collaboration Symposium

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities will host its Fifth PreK-12/Higher Education Collaboration Symposium, a pre-conference event, taking place Oct. 5, 2019, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at the Hilton Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.

The Symposium will feature presentations on student success initiatives implemented between colleges, universities and school districts. Panel presentations on “Using Data to Address Inequity,” “Creating STEM Career Pathways,” and “Addressing Inequities through Collaborative Partnerships,” will each be followed by group discussions. 

Confirmed panelists include John Gatica, senior advisor for strategic initiatives, Equal Opportunity Schools; Adelina Silva, Ph.D., vice chancellor for student success, Alamo Colleges; Aaron Cortes, director for STEM initiatives, Northeastern Illinois University; Melissa Simon, M.D., vice-chair for clinical research, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University; David De Sousa, Ph.D., associate director, engineering academies, College of Engineering, Texas A&M University; Monica Ayala Jimenez, dean of pre-college high school programs, Palo Alto College; Patricia Ramos, dean of workforce and economic development, Santa Monica Colleges; Natalia Suarez Montero, program manager, the University of Illinois at Chicago; Gia Gutierrez, admissions counselor, University of Wisconsin-Parkside; and Emma Diaz, director, San Bernardino Valley College. Click here for agenda and confirmed presenters.

A networking lunch will feature a keynote address by Jesse Ruiz, deputy governor for education, Office of Governor JB Pritzker, State of Illinois. Participants will also receive a HACU government relations update on the HERE Act (Hispanic Educational Resources and Empowerment Act) that would create a new grant program to support partnerships and collaboration between Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) and school districts that educate the majority of Hispanic students.

The Symposium brings together higher education leaders, PreK-12 administrators and other community stakeholders to empower communities by implementing collaborative practices. Online registration is extended through Sept. 26, 2019. Click here to download an event flyer.
