HACU names Sonia Martinez as assistant vice president for advancement and member services

SAN ANTONIO – The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities has announced the appointment of Sonia Martinez as the assistant vice president for advancement and member services, effective February 7, 2022. The new position, a member of the executive team, will be responsible for coordinating the Association’s fundraising, marketing communications, conferences, and membership activities. She will also be responsible for the implementation of HACU’s Capital Campaign.

“We are fortunate to have Sonia Martinez on board. Her knowledge and expertise in subject areas central to our programs and initiatives, combined with her higher education administration background are key assets to advancing the Association’s mission,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “She brings to HACU the skill set needed for our external relations, fundraising, and membership initiatives.”

Martinez first joined HACU in October 2021 as the inaugural executive director of STEM programs. She brings a wealth of knowledge and has over 32 years of leadership, teambuilding, and higher education experience. She previously served as the chief academic officer with Great Minds in STEM, Inc. Prior to that she held several positions at The University of Texas at San Antonio, including serving as chief of staff to the president, assistant to the vice president for community services and vice president for university advancement. She also served as director of corporate relations and director of equal opportunity in engineering in the College of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin.

Martinez earned a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and a bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin.
