HACU and NBCUniversal Telemundo partner to increase Hispanic representation in broadcast media

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) is partnering with NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises to expand the Telemundo Academy, bringing hands-on experience, access and professional knowledge to even more Latino students pursuing careers across the media industry. The new partnership with HACU will further expand Telemundo Academy’s reach to Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) across the country.

The partnership signing between HACU and Telemundo took place on April 18, 2023, in Washington, D.C. at HACU’s 28th Annual National Capitol Forum. Luis Rosero, vice president of corporate and external affairs at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores, Ph.D., signed on behalf of both organizations. Governing Board members and staff of HACU as well as Telemundo representatives were among those present for the signing.

The partnership will bring the academy to HSIs in Chicago, Orlando, Las Vegas, San Antonio, and Denver providing educational resources, career development opportunities, and mentorship programs to Latino students hoping to enter the television, communications, and media industries both in front of the camera and behind.

“This collaboration will allow us to increase participation of Latinos and Latinas in journalism, media and entertainment, and prepare as many of them as possible to succeed as they enter this industry,” said HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores. “The Telemundo Academy is an important way to achieve this goal and HACU is here to support it 100 percent.”

Through the partnership, Telemundo will connect media executives to HSI’s each semester, creating a unique opportunity for students to learn from top professionals in the industry. The program seeks to provide valuable industry exposure to young Hispanic talent, including highlighting the breadth of career opportunities within the world of media and entertainment. In doing so, Telemundo Academy seeks to inspire the next generation of media professionals, while also helping to build a more diverse and inclusive media landscape.

Telemundo Academy’s curriculum for each semester includes digital and social media, production elements, research and the power of storytelling, offering a complete hands-on experience with the processes and elements of creating an original production, along with opportunities to experience tapings of original Telemundo productions.
