HACU announces speakers of 23rd Annual Latino Higher Education Leadership Institute

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities has announced the agenda and speakers of its 23rd Annual Latino Higher Education Leadership Institute, a pre-conference event taking place Nov. 1, 2024, at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center, in conjunction with HACU’s 38th Annual Conference. The one-day Institute will focus on vital skills and strategies for moving up the faculty and administrative ladders in higher education.

Speakers and presentations will focus on topics under the theme “Utilizing High Impact and Equitable Programs to Achieve Organizational Excellence.” The Institute will include a morning keynote by Mordecai Ian Brownlee, Ed.D., president, Community College of Aurora, and a lunch keynote address will be given by Joe Garcia, J.D., chancellor, Colorado Community College System.

Concurrent breakout sessions will focus on three topics:

  • “The Latinx Cluster Hire Initiative,” led by Ariel C. Armony, Ph.D., vice chancellor for global affairs, director, University Center for International Studies, professor of public & international affairs and political science, University of Pittsburgh.
  • “Using Tori Data for Enrollment and Academic Decisions,” led by Veronica Garcia, Ph.D., president, and Laura E. Boyer, Ed.D., vice president, academic success, Northeast Lakeview College.
  • “Center for Broadening Participation in STEM and the ALRISE Grant,” led by Anna Tanguma-Gallegos, senior project manager research, Arizona State University and Mayrismir Cordero, South Central Regional Hub & Experiential Learning coordinator, NSF INCLUDES ALRISE Alliance & Academic Program coordinator, Palo Alto College.

An afternoon session on the "White House Fellowship Program," presented by Francisco Leija, Margarita Colmenares, Vanessa Cobarrubias, and Adan Gonzalez, will provide information about the leadership and service program.

The Institute concludes with a Presidents' Panel that includes Salvador D. Aceves, Ed.D., president, Regis University; Veronica Garcia, Ph.D., president, Northeast Lakeview College; Pardis Mahdavi, Ph.D., president, University of La Verne; Amy Parsons, J.D., president, Colorado State University; and Lester Sandres Rápalo, Ed.D., president, Rockland Community College.
